Japanese Chiyogami Papers

These exquisite chiyogami papers are meticulously produced by hand. The techniques were developed in Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1867) by papermakers who were emulating the fashionable kimono textiles being produced in the Yuzen area of Kyoto. These small-scale paper imitations were intended to be used on dolls and tiny household items, such as tea tins. Many of the patterns contain highly symbolic imagery, such as cranes for long life and plum blossoms and pine boughs for beauty and longevity. From £12 per sheet.

Curwen Printed Papers

The Curwen Studio established in 1863 encouraged artists to work directly on lithographic stones and plates, and helped to generate interest in the potential of lithography for mass production of original work. The Press started a design revolution in typography and illustration in the 1920s when it commissioned work from artists including Edward Bawden, Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious in an era which contributed dramatically to their lasting reputation.
